What is basalt roving?

Basalt roving is a bundle of continuous unidirectional basalt filament yarn.

Due to unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, roving can be used in aggressive environments, exposed to high temperatures, mechanical vibrations or impacts, providing strength and durability to the components and structures.

The properties of basalt roving much surpass E-glass, and are comparable with carbon fiber performance. However, basalt roving has a competitive price, thus it is effectively applied to manufacture composite materials on the industrial scale.

  • Temperature range, from -260 up to +700C;
  • Elongation before breaking, 3,5%;
  • Type of sizing – silane;
  • Sizing content < 1%;

Continuous basalt fiber is made by melting igneous basalt rock. It is an environmentally friendly material because no chemical additives are used to manufacture basalt fiber. It has high strength, resistance to aggressive environments, temperature stability, low electrical conductivity, and hygroscopic properties.

Savings in the construction process occurs when diameters are replaced with smaller ones according to the strength properties (tensile strength of basalt composites is higher than that of metal), lower cost of transportation and unloading, as well as optimization of assembling due to the light weight. In addition, basalt rebar does not corrode or conduct heat, it has hygroscopic properties and therefore basalt rebar reinforced concrete structures are more durable.

Basalt fiber as a reinforcing material is perfectly suited for road construction and repair, namely reinforcement of asphalt concrete and strengthening the road beds with basalt fiber and basalt grid, providing strength and durability for the roadway.
